“When you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world… Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it. You can influence it. You can build your own things that other people can use.”

Steve Jobs said this in 1994 and I believe that Tina Roth Eisenberg lives this truth.

Eisenberg, the @SwissMiss herself, took the 99U Conference stage in an all red, super hip power suit. Work, life and her “labors of love,” the side projects that have become larger than life, are tied up in one ball of yarn for Eisenberg, and you can tell she’s worked hard to create it that way.

Eisenberg explained that before her children came along, she was waiting for the right time to create the opportunities

The biggest takeaway from Eisenberg’s talk was this: “Don’t forget to play.”

Make your work life, your personal life and your labors of love FUN.

Put on a Viking hat when you’re answering emails.

Take pictures of your child’s temper tantrums and make a Tumblr out of it.

Fill your desk drawer with confetti so you’re ready to celebrate when the right time comes along.

Just. Have. Fun. Life – work included – isn’t meant to be boring, sterile or monotonous. Work hard to create the life you want to lead. Don’t wait for it to be created for you.
