The Benefits for Business:

When it comes to businesses, blogging is a great way to get a brand out in the spotlight, giving the company some transparency and allowing audiences to see the brand and its people as real, tangible entities.

Many boast of the benefits of blogging. Lee Olden in a recent post in TopRank Blog proposed, “blogging is by far one of the most effective ways for small businesses to achieve numerous business objectives.”

When asked if blogging was dead, B.L. Ochman commented that blogs are the “most trustworthy source overall for information on the Internet,” suggesting that they’re more influential than brand sites.

The Benefits for a Potential Hire: 

Blogging is also a great way to prove to potential employers that you’re content-creation-capable. What better way for you to tell a potential employer that you’re able to create effective content than by sending them to a personal blog that showcases your strengths – your writing skills, industry expertise, graphic design creations, advertising projects or even business documents.

In an article on SpinSucks, Allen Mireles adds that you should create your own blog and write about “your industry, professional topics, and current events.”

Blogging aids in the creation of YOUR brand. It gives your otherwise faceless resume a voice. Providing a personal blog to a potential employer shows your initiative, particularly when it comes to how often you post and the content you create.

While blogs are awesome when it comes to putting your name out there and bolstering your credentials, it’s important to keep the posts professional, particularly if you’re hoping that your blog will lead to future career gains. Try to keep things in your blog appropriate, and avoid using your blog to trash past employers or friends. Like I said in my last post about branding social media, controversy can be interesting, but completely exposing yourself aids in the discovery of all your flaws.

As I’ve started my own blog recently, I’ve seen the positive effects it can have when applying for jobs. I no longer have to hope that they understand me when I say I write well, I can actually give them the URL to my blog and actively show them how determined and well-written I am.
